Our project was based on state school legislation which ensures the proper implementation of school regulations. We also used the following links www.etwinning.gr www.etwinning.net www.minedu.gov.gr Hotline for Depression at number 1034 www.e-yliko.gr www.iky.gr/erasmus-plus www.erasmusplusyouth.gr ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/index_en.htm www.quidingcities.eu www.facebook.com/quidingcities

Aims of the project

This project aims at improving the quality of teaching and learning at our school. It offers teachers the opportunity to develop their professional skills and to co-operate with colleagues in Europe, by sharing experiences and best practices.

Target group

  • students
  • ESL
  • Teachers

Description of the target group

We invited students of all classes to participate voluntarily. 75 students eventually came through ( 40% boys, 60% girls)

Staff (selection, evaluation, training, promotion)

Our school`s teachers and the PTA took part

Methodological approach, activities implemented

Our methodology was based on strategies of reducing Early School Leaving. We integrated actions/practices to deal with : -lack of self-esteem -lack of self confidence -personal problems or family issues ( homelessness, mourning, substance abuse or psychological problems) -learning difficulties or negative school-related experiences ( bullying, poor school performance, lack of communication with teachers) -the unstable financial situation in Greece, which has resulted to adolescents leaving school in order to make some extra income for the family. We found help at the RONI research, a tool/indicator conducted by East Sussex University, to foresee and prevent Early Leaving School. A number of reasons are involved in this outcome, such as personal problems, need for special tutoring, or exclusion.

Results and impact - data of program internal/ external evaluation, beneficiary satisfaction, the impact of the didactical practices at individual and institutional level

Results and impact after the implementation of our project: •Our students were integrated •"Happy children" were seen in the school campus •They gained self-confidence •Their talents were acknowledged and appreciated •Creativity was enhanced •Better cooperation and mutual understanding was developed among students •They experienced unforgettable moments at school •The teachers` role as educators was promoted •Better school performance •Improved social and communication skills

Conclusions, lessons learned

Early Leaving School is a complex issue, which depends on various inter-connected factors. Hence the school must be a place of socialisation, expression and a place where students may improve their self esteem and gain confidence. Also the school must be a place where they feel comfortable and accepted. This is the philosophy upon which our programme was designed and put to practise.

Directions of further development/ Transferability, replicability

Schools are advised to promote and develop actions that can address the students` needs, improve their self confidence and make school a better and friendlier place .
